9/11 - Seven Men In A Boat Heading For The Amazon

Twelve years ago Iain Jamieson and myself had written and recorded the above song. It was written to be part of the sound track of a BBC documentary that was being made about Amazon Hope.

While the ship was making its way to the Amazon  crossing the Atlantic Ocean on the 11th September 2001, two planes were crashed into the Twin Towers in New York causing death and destruction. Air travel has changed beyond recognition because of the events of hat day.

The video was put together later that year  highlighting the fact that in the midst of desolation and despair hope can still return. Wille McPherson now the Chief Execitive of the Trust often reflects on his feelings at that time as he sailed in the ship. It was a time of great trauma and uncertainty as the ship crossed the ocean. I often think it highlights the good and the evil in the world.  While evil men we plotting to bring death and destruction; seven men from the UK were sailing a little ship across the Atlantic to bring health and healing to some of the most marginalised people in Peru.

The lyrics of te song were inspired by a sermon that was once preached by a black preacher focusing on the message of the Gospel in six words. " it's Friday Night But Sunday's Comin'"

You may be living through your Friday Night of shear hell, but remember the hope that comes on Easter Sunday. The song invites us all to move from despair to hope.

Our little ship was truly on a rescue mission. Today two ships now operate in the Amazon taking health care to over 100,000 people. Each year a average  over 300 volunteers, many of whom are doctors, nurses and dentist go to work on these ships in the Amazon. Over 95% come from the UK. I think it's amazing how good things can grow and be an inspiration to others.

As I write a third ship is now being prepared to head out next month to Lake Vicoria in Central Africa. So on a day like this when we remember those who lost so much it is good to give thanks for those who ventured across an ocean to bring hope to some of the most vulnerable people in Amazonia. check out the Vine Trust  www.vinetrust.org
