The Study or the Building Site

The last month has been a bit of a shambles for me. I came back from holiday thinking I might decorate the study. I thought I'll get a new carpet and paint the walls. Well when I started I discovered there was a damp patch behind the book shelves and some of my books had been damaged by the damp. The joiner noticed the floor boards were saging and before long carpets were up, book cases where being taken off the walls and in a short space of time the garage was a store and the dining room was a temporary study. My study had become a building site. I started with good intention and before long I had uncovered wet rot. Well just about one month later I'm back at my desk again the bookshelves are up but alas the books are not in order so one day next week I'll have to find some time to re-arrange the library I've nearly fifty shelves of books. Have I read them all I hear you ask? Yes and no! I've dipped into most, say 90% of them. So has the computer and the ipad no done away with the books. Perhaps in the future but as for now I must confess I like having my books stacked up around me. perhaps its a bit of a security blanket. Oh one other thing has happened to the study. I've thrown out a lot of stuff and there is now a debate going on as to what is really necessary. All this got me thinking that perhaps there is a lesson to be learned from my decorating idea. If i had left everything the way it was it could have been years before I discovered the wet rot. It was something i could have seen far enough but now a few weeks on. i've got the florr boards sanded the walls painted and decorated and it looks like I've moved to a new house. When trouble comes as it will perhaps its an opportunity to re-evalute what is really necessary and an opportunity to make changes. Of course when i talk of the study looking like a building site, perhaps that what a study should always be. A place where you can think and begin to build your life all over again.
